Fogo, May 30, 1853. The weather here, for the past three or four days, has been very eolid,the winds high, and a great sea has been washing the shores of our rock-girt isle. There has been a little codfish caught, but the fishery now stere be said to have commenced. Inculnerable Slioals of herrings are surrounding our island—you may judge of the quantity when I tell you that one man caught 12m barrels in his (ove) net in one night. ‘The planter do not like to see the codfish on our shores untie 10th June or even Iater, as past experience has toubhit them that the later the fishery commences the better the ulti mate returns of the voyage. Whooping cough,and a kind of influenza, are rife anong have been no fatal cases so far. One here from Montreal (only 11 days),she came through the straits; reports seeing many icebergs, but no field ice. Every one is too neprly ready to begin the summer voyage, with signs ticipations of success, to enable them to lay in a stbck of pro visions for the ensuing winter for themselves and families.
