SUNDAY WAS RED LETTER DAY FOR ST. JUDE LEAGUE IN MOMENCEST. JUDE’S DEDICATION ONSUNDAY DRAWS MANY VISITORS TO THE CITYDespite the fact that during early 1 morning hours a hard rain visited Momence and vicinity and throughout the day the clouds hung low and rain threatened, hundreds flocked to St. Jude's seminary from far and near, in order that they might parti-eijjate in the laying of the corner stone of the second unit in the building plans of the seminaryLarge delegations from Chicagoend Milwaukee police forces were present! and took active parts in the features of the day Several years ago Momence was chosen by the Missionary Sons of the Holy Heart of Mary or Clare-tian missionaires, as the site where they would erect a seminary which would be used for the preparation of young men for the priesthood The celebration on Sunday was the laying of the comer stone of tf'e second cnit in the plan or the front section which will be the connecting link in the project Heavy rains in early morningmade it impossible for the great throng from Chicago, Milwaukee and the Momer.ce community to enter the grounds of the new semiruiry just off the Dixie Highway northeast of this city and forced postponement of the cornerstone laying until late afternoon The Right Rev. William D O’Brien Junior Auxiliary Bishop of the Chicago archdiocese who was to bless the cornerstone was unable to remain until that late because of confirmation rites elsewhere and delegated tJhe dedication to the Rev Harold J Kenney of Chicago assistant direc tor of the Society for the Propaga tion of the Faith Since the weather prevented the e open air dedicatory masg that had a been planned Father ,Kenney cele c brated two masses in St. Patrick’s * church, a low mass at 11 o’clock and * high mass shortly after noon the * latter being attended by Bishop * O'Brien. The church was crowded to capacity on both occasions *The event drew to Momence high 1 dignitaries of the Claretian order ‘ which with the completion of the * new training school, will have four F such institutions in the nationAmong them was the Very Rev 1 Justus Sedan© of Los Angeles, pro- ' vincial of the Claretian order in the United States, accompanied by his t provincial consultants the Very Rev Immanual Milagro, secretary to the provincial and provincial perfect of studies, ani the Rev Stephen Emal- s dio, pastor of the famous Our Lady Queen of Angels church of Los Ange { les, aldest landmark in that} city ) The dedicatory mass and the con j secration v/ere attended by 1500 po- ( lice officers of Chicago and Milwaukee and their families. The police- ( men being members of the St. Jude ] League, sponsor of the new semin -ary. The officers were accompanied . by Captain John Stege of the Chi- J cago police and the Rev Anthony j Catalina, spiritual director of the league ,Large numbers of the officers and their families came to Momence by special train and paraded from the depot to the church led by the Mo mence high school band directed by ! Paul T. LiijedahJ At the high mass Bishop O’Brien j was attended by the Rev. Thomas Reed, his secretary, *nd the Claretian provincial as chaplains. The , ! sermon was preached by the Rev ! Arthur S. Crook pastor of Sacred , Heart church at Prescott, Arizona a member of the Claretian order as a convert from the Angelican church The seminary was established four years ago by the Rev James Stort, treasurer of the major Claretian seminary. So far four young men sons of Chicago policemen have grad uated from the seminary, finishing , the first five of their 13 years of study and are now completing their educations in California. There are now 20 seminarians and thL fall when the first unit of the building is increased to 50
