MONUMENT TO A PROSPECTOR 1In reaching a conclusion to call the town to be established at the Nenana fields Densmore” the Alaskan engineering commission pays a pretty compliment to and honors the name of one of the pioneer prospectors of Alaska. Thirty-five years ago Frank Densmore, a strong young man, came to Alaska to seek the elusive gold that man loves so well. In the course of his prospecting expeditions he visited the Nenana district and was the first white man, so far as known, to note the fact that coal was native in that region. It was on the suggest;on of Delegate Wiek-ersham that the engineering commission adopted this name. The delegate called the attention of the members to the fact that the pioneer prospector was the discoverer of the coal measures of the district and made an urgent appeal that the town to be established there be named for him. This suggestion was readily adopted, and as long as time shall endure the town of Densmore will be a monument to the lonely prospector whose weary feet trod the Nenana coalfields a third of a .century ago. Little did this brave, hardy prospector realize that within his lifetime a railway would penetrate that then remote and unknown region; that the coal measures he discovered would be developed, and that a town, named in his honor, would be established.—Valdez Prospector.
