War College graduates 649NWC Public Affairs StaffU.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-lnd., will address the 649 graduates of the Naval War College at ceremonies today at 10 a.m. on Dewey Field.The Naval War College graduating class includes officers from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard; civilians from various government agencies; and international students representing 64 countries. Many graduates will take high level assignments in command of ships or squadrons, or as members of strategic planning staffs.Graduates have completed the Naval War College's rigorous academic program. Their core curriculum consists ofcourses in Strategy and Policy, Joint Military Operations and National Security Decision Making. Along with these courses, students are challenged in elective courses that cover a variety of subjects. The curriculum features seminar-based coursework that promotes invigorating debate and in-depth discussion on global case studies.Sen. Lugar is the longest serving senator in Indiana's history. He is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and former chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.In 1957, Lugar volunteered for the U.S. Navy and served as an intelligence briefer for Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Arleigh Burke.As a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, Lugar has played an active role in global nuclear arms reduction. Since 1991, with the bipartisan support of former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia, Luger's efforts have resulted in the deactivation of more than 6,800 nuclear warheads in the former Soviet Union alone.
