By MARION DUNN Herald Sports Editor An old champion made certain a new champion will be crowned this year in the men's division of the Daily Herald Bowling Championships. Jack Wadley, owner manager of the host Jack and Jill Lanes in American Fork and 1974 champion, defeated defending champion Ray Campbell of Provo, 4-3, in an opening round match that lived up to all its expectations as the men held their first round of the finals Tuesday night Wadley jumped off to a 3-0 lead in games then had to fight for his bowling life in the seventh game to take the win as Campbell made an impressive comeback In other first round men's matches Tuesday night. George DeBell defeated Jerry Phillips, 4-0. Dennis Carlson eliminated Ron Evans, 4-0; Blaine Richan beat young Kevin Hail, 4-1; Ron Maxey defeated Shawn Brady, 4-0; Mack Hall bested Gary Warren, 4-1; Jay Young ousted ee Hampton, 4-2; and Pete Evans outlasted 68 - year - old Russ Halladay, 4-2-1. Tonight's action will feature both men and women divisions with play to begin at 7 p.m. The women played their first round Monday night. Tonight's winners will advance to Thursday's semifinals with the winners then moving into Friday night's championship matches. All matches are head - to head battles with the winners advancing and the losers dropping out. Matches are a best - of - seven battle, Tuesday night, Wadley won the feature battle in which two former champions were matched. Wadley won the first game, 185-164; the second, 216-182, and the third, 182-164. But then Campbell turned things around. The Province, who has one of the most unusual approaches in the game, warmed up to capture three straight games, 225-198, 224-201, and 200-174. That took the two into the deciding seventh game and it was a thriller The two matched pins right to the ninth frame when Campbell missed a Spare Pickup. He struck twice in the 10th but finished at 208. It wasn’t enough. Wadley had a spare in the eighth and he struck in the ninth, then wound up with a flourish striking out for a 238. The Evans - Halladay match was another thriller. Evans, who rotls the hardest ball of all the finalists, won the first game 148-143. He took the second at 200-195, but they tied in the third game at 180 each. Evans then won 194-153 for a 3-0-1 lead in games. In the sixth game, the veteran Halladay stayed alive by taking a six - pin win, 176- 170. And then he prolonged the match by winning the sixth game by a single pin, 185-184. Halladay struck on his first ball in the 10th while Evans took nine pins on a spare for the difference. The final game was just as exciting with Evans winning, 166 to 163.
