lull program later.Ibis city was visited by a very bard rain norm Tuesday night, causing some damage to sidewalks and small bridges, also filling' a great number of cellars. All evening the skies in the northwest showed signsof a storm, and about 11.30 it started in earnest. The rain fell in sheets, the lightning was very sharp, wind accompanied the storm, breaking several shade treees. The water on some of the streets was two and three feet deep.A. great amount of damage was done on 6th street, the water from the sine streets flowing to the surf sewer, washed the dirt from the grading and covered the openings, this caused the water to flow down 6th street as best it could, washing out sidewalks and part of the B. 0. R. N. R5y track. The bridge at Iowa and 3d was washed out, with several sidewalks. A number of cellars in that neighborhood was filled 'with water, and a great many chickens drowned. At the corner of 6t-h and Main Streets the water flowed with suen force as to undermine the paving and^ sidewalk in front of the B. C. R. N. depot, causing it to settle several feet. At Weisbard Bros. Plaining Mill, corner of Washington and 2d Streets, the water washed, part of the front foundation out and the water stood three feet in the cellar, in the engine room, two cans of machine oil was overturned, making a very bad mess around the engine, which was partly under water and oil, several belts were ruined. The cellar of the Lindel! hotel was partly filled with water, which run in at the windows, washing out part of the new paving in the alley. The big ditch which drains the west part of town and empties into the river near the boat houses, carried a great stream of water with force enough to wash two boat houses into the river. In the west part of town sidewalk, fences and. lumber was carried blocks away, many cellars were tilled. Trains No. 5 and No. 6 on theB. 0- li. N. were delayed here, until 8.30 Wednesday morning on account of the condition of the track on 6th street. The tent at the Normal which was erected for the Commencement exercises was blown down shortly after the banquet Tuesday evening, several people were in it but no one injured, the guests had. been out but a short time. The bridge on Normal Street was undermined enough to make it unsafe for traffic. A great many cellars in the low part of Normal addition were flooded, and sidewalks are laying in all directions. Several houses just being built were damaged bv the water washing out the foundations, and the wind blowing parts away. A great deal of lumber floated several blocks from its original place. The bridges on Main Street near the stone quarry were damaged, one being washed away, the other badly undermined, the street car bridge was raised up a few feet, and the curve at 24th and Main Streets, was badly damage!, and traffic suspended until 9.30, Wednesday morning. No lives were lost, but several people, in saving their stock, received cold baths.
