Religious.A meeting of great interest lias been progressing at the 12. M. Church in this oily, since the 8ill of this month. The audiences Lave been very largo. The attendants not only filled the church, but many occupied positions cutside from which the exercises could be witnessed After every invitation, the altar has been crowded with mourners, and at. the time of writing the seekers are increasing instead of diminishing in' number. The Pastor, Rev. Mr. Heard, has had as co-labnrcrs the Presiding Kldcr, Rev. Mr. MeGchee, Rev. Mr. Daniel, of the Baptist Ohnrch, and others whose names are mentioned bclovr. Rev. William Stegall,-Heard county, n retired but worthy minister, is in attendance, and, though jtliysically unable to preach, lubors zealously with those who have been convicted of sin. ltev. G. J. Pearce, President of i lie LaG range Female College, and' a minister of great ability, although incapacitated for the pulpit from recent sickness, has labored earnestly in the sarue field with the good man above named. Rev. Allen Turner preached one sermon during his stay with us. This aged expounder of the Gospel commenced preaching fifty-five years ago, and though time has silvered his hair and made his step unsteady, still in spirit he is more eager in the sorvioc of his Master than he was the first day he entered the pulpit. lie was followed by Rev. D. P. Jones in an exhortation. There is scarcely a man, i woman or child in this section of Georgia who is not acquainted with this good man, so noted for his zeal m behalf tf religion and temperance. He preached,in Match, 1S2S, the first sermon ever heard in Nevrnan. The place of worship was a small log Court House, long since replaced by one of brick. On the 4th of July, 1832, he addressed, in this city, the first audience ever assembled in this county for the purpose of listening to a temperance lecture. For fifteen consecutive years thereafter, at each term of theSuperior Court, he lectured on the same*subjectBishop George F. Pearce arrived in our city Saturday of last week, and preached one sermon each day until his departure, last Wednesday. It has never beeu our fortune to listen to more enter-taiuing, soul-stirring discourses than those ■ delivered by this great and good man.— j Our people rejoiced at his coming .and ; grieved at his departure, and we but speak the sen limits of all when we say that he will receive' a cordial welcomefrom the citizens of Newnan if he should• •ever again visit our citv. -
