Delphos should have six newly constructed tennis courts in Stadium Park by Sept. 30 if all goes well, according to John Dickman, who initiated the pro ject to construct the new courts. The project this week received a $10,000 dona tion from the William J. Flickinger Fund of the Van Wert County Foundation. New courts will be constructed in the same loca tion as the current ones. Cost of the new courts will total $83,000, and the courts should last at least as long as the courts in place now, if not longer, according to Dickman. “This time it will be done right, under the direc tion of a tennis court consultant,” Dickman said. “The courts will be built up to the middle fence to allow water to drain.” Consultant is Kevin Smith of Toledo. He only deals with tennis courts and has signed a contract with the city to oversee the entire operation. Better quality surface sealant will be used, and some new fencing will be installed, said Dickman. Consideration was given to redoing the present courts but following an inspection by engineers, it was decided that redoing the old courts would be a waste of money because in two to three years it would have to be done over again, Dickman said. Plans were considered to build only three courts at a cost of $63,000 but it was decided to go for all six because it was only an additional $20,000. The project is currently $11,000 short and if all goes well, the money will be raised and work will begin after July 4, Dickman said. Dickman started the project in 1989 because of the poor condition of the courts. He approached the Mueller-Scherger Foundation, which donates money for community projects, and told them how he wanted assistance with the project and a year later received a check for $16,200. He then approached city council which set aside an additional $25,000. The project has received $13,000 from the Delphos Recreation Department and $6,300 from individuals in addition to the Van Wert County Foundation donation. John Dickman, left, receives a $10,000 check from Bill Derry, chairman of the Bequest Committee of the Van Wert Foundation. Kenny Grothous, city parks superintendent, was also on hand for the presentation. The $10,000 came from the William J. Flickinger Fund of the Van Wert County Foundation and was donated to help fund six new tennis courts to be constructed at Stadium Park this summer.
