West rolls over EastBy M.J. STARSHAKA pre-game cheer of “West is Best” proved prophetic as the West out-scored the East, 52-18, in the second half to win South Suburban College’s Girls All-Star Cage Classic, 74-46.The West fell behind at the half,SSC Girls Cage Classic28-20, but 11 second-half points from Bloom's Tanya White (the game’s MVP) sparked the come-from-behindvictory.“She (Thornton’s Arlene Miller, who did not participate) coached me at the half,” said White, who will attend Ft. Scott in Kansas. “She told me I was rushing my shot. She said to take my time and work as a team.”Mark Morgan, St. Francis de Sales’ basketball coach, took the helm of the West team. TF North’s John O’Keefe coached the team representing the East.“We tried for continuity,” said O’Keefe. “Marci Smith (Thornridge) looked really good in the first half, but they (the West team) just got hot.”Smith added nine points in the contest, second in scoring behind Thorn-wood’s Kara Behn (11 points, 2-for-3 from the free throw line). Teammate Karen Maciejewski put forth a strong effort on the boards with a team-leading seven rebounds.Kelly Wiggins of Eisenhower led the West’s scoring with 16 points, including a perfect 2-for-2 showing at the line. Wiggins added five rebounds and temporary teammates Janessa Davis (Bloom) and Cathy Phason (Crete-Monee, helping out diminished West team) controlled the boards for the West with seven rebounds each. The East jumped out to a 7-0 start, but the West came back to within two at 14-12 with 8.45 left in the half. The East remained a step and at least a bucket ahead throughout the first half, primarily thanks to Smith’s shooting and team-oriented rebounding. The West did not give in an all-star performance in the opening minutes, shooting l-for-6 with six turnovers in the first five and a half minutes. A relative hotstreak followed to keep the game interesting, but it was the second half that shone as a true all-star game.Morgan’s squad chipped away at the six-point deficit with buckets by Eisenhower’s Tina McAfee (eight points, four rebounds) and the West took a lead for the first time at 16:16 when White hit a short jumper to put her team up, 31-30.The West, led by the offensive tandem of White and Janessa Davis, put it in drive and outscored the East, 35-10, highlighted by White’s three-pointer at the 9:25 mark.
