The Maid-Ritc shop was owned and operated by Mrs. Vera Rue, a former secretary in a Cresco law firm.Oscar Slreit, owner of the State Line Inn north of Chester, purchased “Al's cafe in 1948 from Al Bohr, who lumght the cafe from Gordon Weinkauf in 1947.The Kapler cafe on Market street was purchased by Mr, and Mrs. I. E. Erickson of Decorah, parents of Lyle and Donald Erick-, son of Cresco, in 1959. Mrs.' Erickson had been a cook in the DecoraH hotel.ed and managed by Mr. and Mrs. i .VJary and Bonnie Eaton. The cof-Raymond Joorgcr, wlm purchased -the business from Arthur Schneider in 1951.Mr. Ray and Mr. Pappas apparently separii'led business in tr rest s. W. Wentworth lunch room on Market street. Mr. DeNoyellcs’ forty acre farm was included in the transaction and Mr. Wentworth ■moVcd to (he farm.JDr. J. J. Clcmmer took over the management of his son’s candy store in 1924 and began solving meals. Cleninicr’s cafe was operated under the mangc-fee shop w a s located at their home at 117 Third avenue west, It took the entire first floor of the rambling stone house and consisted of a lounge, main and private dining rooms, serving room and kitchen. A dance orchestra of seven instruments, known at ‘‘Bonnie Eaton and her Buddies,” played in the lounge during dinner.Paul Barnes purchased the McDermott cafe in August of 1934. After a brief period of remodeling, it became the Elms cafe. EriZuhasky owned t h c cafe from July of 1945 until April of 1940, when Joe Hart and John Jury of Dows became the owners of thee.ife. Already in December of1946 E. J. Widman and Ralph Woodward look over the business.Earl Birdsell and his wife operated a dining and dancing club in the old Norton House, which was built in 1897. The place, which is one-half mile east of Cresco, was known as the Deer-wood club and owned by William Reinhardt. The club was started in 1947 and closed in 1952 when it was remodeled for the Good .Samaritan home.About the Lime of the closing of the Deenvood cluh, Raymond Joorgcr, owner ami manager of the Cresco Cafe, purcha-sed the Rink slaughter house at Vernon Springs and remodeled -d,t into a dining and dancing club. He called it the Tower, club. Mr. Joerger continued to operate the club until 1958, at which; time he sold the business to the American Legion,It is difficult for the patrons of the American Legion Tower club to realize that the wjll-decor-ated club was once used as a
