In Retrospect50 Years Ago TodayThe Ledger said: “The cry of‘Fire’ about 7 o’clock broughtout a large crowd of people whorushed to the scene of action,on Washington street aboveChestnut, in the frame buildingon the premises of John M. He-neise, merchant. The lower partof the structure was occupied by Daniel Wise, as a shoemaker shop, and by Charles Sostman, as a butcher shop; the second story as a warehouse by He-neise and one apartment as a lodging room by Charles Bard-ling. Her.eise had a slow fire made under some meat hanging in one of the rooms, in order to smoke it, and the flames from this communicated to the side of the building, thence to the roof.” After another long description, The Ledger said the loss was $50.
