HILARY KRAUS SPORTS EDITOR The best in the high school girls bas ketball business arrived in Farmington Monday for the annual North-South All-Star games. And as in the past, it will be four days of two-a-day practices before Friday night’s showtime. The 13th annual event features a Class A/AA (small schools) game at 6 p.m., followed by the Class AAA/AAAA (big schools) game at Farmington High School. Among the local talent who will compete for the North big school’s team are Farmington guard Yiwikai Lee, Kirtland’s forward Celeste King and guard Charlotte Dodge and Shiprock guard Nanel Francisco. Others selected to the North team are center Sharlee Johnson and guard Del phina Peters of Class AAAA state champion Gallup, Nicole Allman of Manzano, Rebecca Fresquez of Pojoaque, Kim Jennings of Cibola, Shannon McConkey of Albuquerque Academy and Pam Zens of Los Lunas. The North squad is being coached by Albuquerque Highland coach Gary Gutierrez. The South big school’s squad is being coached by Las Cruces Onate’s Rick Viramontes. Albuquerque Eldorado’s Cameisha Fox, the Class AAAA most valuable player at the state tournament, failed to meet academic requirements and is not on the squad. According to tournament director Farmington girls basketball coach coach Bill Dowty, the North squads will be the favorites. In the past 13 years, the South has won just five times in both the big and small school games. Its most recent big-school victory came just two years ago 69-63. Last year, the North walloped the South 120- 55, setting a record. In small-school competition, the North won 62-52. Janet Holst of Newcomb will coach the North small schools, which includes her senior players Earlene Bitsoie and Nathalene Bitsoie. Larry King of Que mada will coach the South small schools. Dowty said the practices will be geared toward uncomplicated offenses and defenses, along with conditioning. In addition to the games, Farm ington High School will play host to a Play Day Tournament this year. Ten teams will compete in a round-robin tournament beginning 7:30 a.m. Satur day through 3 p.m. Sunday. Farmington, Kirtland (Saturday only), Gallup, Albu querque Manzano, Las Cruces, Alam ogordo, Alamogordo JV, Monument Valley (Ariz.), and Pojoaque will com pete. Graduating seniors will not play.
