Orioles’ Etchebarren Unhappy In Baltimore BALTIMORE (AP) — Andy Etchebarren refused to pose for the Baltimore Orioles’ 1975 team picture this week and the disgrunted catcher would just as soon make his absence official. For the past few seasons, the veteran receiver has asked to be traded. And now he's threatening to retire from baseball unless he is dealt to another club by the June 15 deadline. “Am not saying anything,” Etchebarren said prior to Friday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals. “The club is going bad enough as it is and there’s no sense in causing any trouble.” Etchebarren admitted, however, that he had conferred with Manager Earl Weaver and General Manager J. Frank Cashen. Among other things, he informed them that his wife refuses to move east for the summer. “If Andy’s personal problems dictate that he has to retire,’ Weaver said, “there’s nothing we can do about it. We offered to let him go home right now if he wants and pay him through June 15.” But Weaver said he wouldn't use Etchebarren as long as he continued his threat to leave. ‘‘You don’t build a club around someone who plans to leave June 15. Cashen said he told Etchebarren the chances of him being traded were bet ween ‘‘slim and none. I'm not going to make a trade just for trade’s sake.” Etchebarren would prefer to be dealt to the California Angels, who are located near his home. ‘‘The Angels are interested in him,’’ Cashen said, ‘“‘but they don’t want to give up anything. Why, Andy would catch over 100 games there for another four years.”’ Etchebarren didn’t report to spring training this year until after the Orioles invoked the reserve clause in his contract. He wound up as the starting catcher when the season opened but cracked a bone in his left elbow on April 15 and was placed on the disabled list the next day. He was reactivated on May 20 after he filed a grievance with the Major League Baseball Players Association, claiming the Orioles were using delaying tactics in restoring him to the roster.
