MGHTHAWK NOTES.Sunday afternoon after repeated efforts on the part of the operator at Conocnully to catch Nlghthawk over the telephone a message was picked up by Leo Andrus at his home, about a mile cast of this place, announcing the serious illness of Mrs. Fred Neal. The message was for Mrs. Neal's mother, Mrs. J. p. Gormley, and an urgent request was made that Mrs. Gormley hasten to the bed side of her daughter. Mr. Andrus delivered the message at once. Mr. Gormley was away from home at his ranch, and the distracted mother, without conveyance, appealed to a resident of Night-hawk having horses and vehicles for means to reach Conconully. Then was exhibited one of the most unkind nets ever recorded in this community. Turning a deaf ear to the frantic appeals of an agonised mother the owner of the horses and buggies refused to accommodate the mother, although any price was offered for a conveyance as far as Loomis where another vehicle could be secured. But a heartless refusal was all the response Mrs. Gormley could secure. It is charged that the accommodation was refused because Mr. Gormley would not join a recently organized political party in that place, that, preaches good will to men but practices brutality to fellow-men. If this is an example. The prayers of the mother for aid were heard, for when hope of reaching her child was almost abandoned Jimmie McKinley drove in from Loomis with a rig, s«tt to convey Mrs. Gormley toijutt ntnoa urhflra onAfknn wanawaiting fo take her on to COnconutty. The drive from Loomis to Nlghthawkand return was made in record time. Both W. C. Jones and Frank Grogan were unfortunately out of town, or a team could have been secured. When Mr. Jones returned and heard of the incident these were his exact words: Why didn't some one take my team-' Had I been here 1 wrould have taken Mrs. Gormley to her child if the horses dropped dead the moment I reached our destination. This, Mr. Editor, is the difference between an honest, sympathetic citizen and the majority of so-called reforming socialists. What Mr. Grogan said would have done had he been at home is hardly necessary to dwell on. He would have gotten Mrs. Gormley to Conconully if horseflesh could make the trip.A serious fire in The Cove, on Palmer lake, was prevented last Friday evening only because there happened to be no wind. While Dan Mulcahey was mowing nis alfalfa by some unaccountable means a fire started in the hay and before it could be extinguished it had burned over several acres, consuming considerable hay that had been shocked. Had there been any wind blowing at the time there is no telling where the flames would have stopped or how much damage would have been done. Some think the fire started from reflection through a piece of glass. Mr. Mulcahey is of he opinion it caught from sparks from the horse's shoes striking flinty rock. Others think that too much economy caused the tire. Anyhow, Dan is using more oil since the escape and the machine is running much better than it did before.IV-onIn-,n-ip-he be nd is ice tat lr-of 8t ro-iseg-18-id-n-tatra-ley itor- !
