For ihc Pouicroy Weekly Telegraph.Long Bottom, May 20, J61.Dear Teleyraph—It may be interesting to some of your readers to know that Olive Township has not “seceded yet. On last Saturday we raised a pole oue hundred feet high, (the but of it is hickory, with a poplar top.) After the pole was up, a beautiful flag was run up by Henry Sherman., Esq., one of the oldest and staunchest Union men of Western Virginia. As the “Stars and Stripes went up on this side of the river, they were also run up a pole opposite here, in Murrayville, Va. There were over three hundred citizens present, and the wildest enthusiasm prevailed. After the flag was up at Murrayville. it was proposed that we should go over and serenade it. M r. Swan tendered the free use of his ferry-boat, and as man) as could get aboard went across, marched through the town to the tunc of ‘-Yankee Doodle, and surrounding the pole, played a number of patriotic airs; gave I three cheers for the Union men of Western \ irginia, and then came back.It was then proposed that we organize a meeting and call for volunteers for a Home Guard. The meeting was organized by calling Whittcinore Reed, Esq.. to the Chair, who, on taking the Chair, made a short speech, full of patriotism and tight, and then called on all who I were willing to unite with him in defending the “Stars and Stripes to give their names. About 70 names were offered. The meeting adjourned to meet nest Saturday to organize a Home Guard.
