Tornado leaves hundreds homeless9 WARREN - County residents saddled with destroyed or damaged homes have the right to file for property tax deductions on the amount thev normally pay. County Auditor Ed Bush said Wednesday Residents can file the property tax redc*ion claim by obtaining the Destroyed Building Affidavit form available at county officers or at disaster service centers in Niles McKinley High School and elsewhere Bush, however, stressed that property tax relief will not come until the 1986 tax year because the county collects taxes one vear behind the calendar date. The county will begin collecting second half. 1984. taxes at the end of June.As a result of the one-year lag in property tax collections, residents with destroyed or damaged homes will not get any actual tax relief until 1986 when they begin paying taxes on the 1985 vear.In filling out the damage report, residents must list the account orpermanent parcel number, theestimated dollar amount of damage to the home and the amount of insurance recovery, and a description of the damage. Two disinterested persons” also must sign the form before a notary publicThe residents will have to estimate the damage to their homes For example, if the value of a house is $50,000 and it is partiallydestroyed, the valuation would then be halved to around $25,000 and 1985 property taxes to the county will be paid on that amount,” Bush said County employees will inspect each property to verify claimsmade, and will inspect theproperties again around Jan. 1.1986. to determine if any improvements have been made or the home has been rebuilt. That information wil then be reflected in the homeowners' 1985 tax returns Bush also noted that damage to trees and cars are not included in property damage estimates. ’ Cars are not considered for property tax or personal property taxFACILITY DEMOLISHED — This aerial shot of damage to the Rt. 422“Strip” area shows total destruction of Autumn Hills Nursing Home.
