By RANDY PADGETT The Garland Owls jumped to an early 5-1 lead Wednesday night and coasted to their second straight American Legion win over Highland Park at Samuels Parrk. Owl pitcher Jay Cannon threw a no-hit ball game, but issued nine walks in the five inning af fair and picked up the vic tory, 6-4. The Scots scored a run in the top of the first on two errors and two walks. But the Owls came back quickly in the bottom half. John Richardson led off with a single into left field and then made two easy steals. Danny Harris scored Richardson from third on a long fly into cen ter field. Jamie Miller walked on a full count, Ken Foster walked, and the two runners pulled off a crafty double steal. Jack Booth singled into a left-center which brought Miller ar ound to score. Booth then stole second and the throw went into center field and Foster raced home from third. The Owls still weren’t through, leading 3-1 Jerry Armstrong kept the rally going with a slashing dou ble down the left field line. An out later Armstrong scored what turned out to be the deciding run on an error at third base. Highland Park continued to take advantage of Can non’s wildness as it scored three more runs in the top of the second. Four walks and a hit batsman ac counted for all of the Scots runs in the stanza. Richardson got the Owls going again in the second as he ran out an infield sin gle and then stole second. One out later Miller brought Richardson home with a sharp base hit into center field. Booth picked up another single, but the Scots finally got out of the inning. Cannon started to settle down in the third as he walked only two and pro tected his slim 6-4 advan tage The Owls kept the pressure on in the bottom half loading the bases, but couldn’t come up with an other tally. In the fourth and fifth stanzas Cannon found the range and shut the door on the Scots. Striking out the side in the fourth and work ing his way out of trouble in the fifth, Cannon picked up five of his total ten strikeouts. Booth slapped out another hit in the fourth to give him a perfect 3-for-3 night. The Owls have a double header Saturday night with the first game against Ber kner at 6:30 and the second against North Mesquite at 8:30 p.m. Both games will be at Reverchon Park. South Garland’s game against Bryan Adams, scheduled for last night at Pleasant Grove, was post poned due to a conflicting Dallas RBI contest which had been slated at the same field.
