Drug Unit In County FundlessThe Ventura County Bureauof Narcotics Enforcement which lias battled the narcotics problem since it was established lour years ago will cease operations Friday it was learned today.Sheriff Al Jalaty said the disbanding of the task force w as necessitated when it was learned no state or federal lunds for its operation were available.“The loss oi the bureau is a tragedy.” said Jalaty, noting it had cracked several large narcotic systems in the county and was investigating othersHe said the nine men — four sheriff’s deputies and one officer each from Oxnard Ventura, Port llueneme, Santa Paula and Fillmore, will returnto their regular assignments But, Jalaty is hoping toregroup a narcotics team and consolidate it with the VenturaCounty Crime Specific Team, with county funds.“I have requested $330,000from the Board of Supervisors pointing out the importance of the joint program to identity, arrest and successfullywprosecute major and street level offenders in narcotics, burglary and fencingoperations throughout thecounty,” he said“It has been established that more than 80 per cent of the burglars who are apprehended are narcotics addicts,* the sheriff pointed out “Intelligence has indicated that the burglar converts stolen goods to cash for the purchase of narcotics or trades theproperty directly for narcotiesLocal law enforcement ol ficials said the task force makes “a significant impact” upbn the narcotics traffic in the county, according to Jalaty.Jalaty said the team has worked with all law enforcement agencies in major(See Drug Team, Page 2)
