or The Harvey G's, crew were arrest ed the other evening by the revenue officers at High Island for selling intoxicating liquors to the Indians. Mr. Gondreau owns the boat, but it cannot be learned as yet whether he was among the crew arrested. Tom Sullivan of Finn Flavin's camp is in the city. A tin shower was given at the home of Grace Fox, who is to be married in about a week. Ed. Pettit, the proprietor of the Barnes hotel, is sending hangers out to all the hotels in Michigan and bordering states to fully advertise this first class hotel. Peter Zimmerman who has been away on business, arrived in this city last evening. Mrs. A. J. Smith yesterday morn ing by mistake took carbolic acid in stead of the medicine she intended taking and was stricken dangerous ly ill. But by quick aid of the doc tors she was pulled through and will recover. Miss Roseberry of St. Louis and Miss C. M. Wright of Saginaw are in the city canvassing for a well known corset firm. Mrs. A. N. Nelson of the Sea is in the city visiting friends and re latives. Mrs. Capt. Faganston of this city left last evening for Washington Is land, where she will visit her parents and friends. Walter Hansen of Negaunee, who has been in the city for a few days on business, returned to Escanaba last evening. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chamberlain of Shingleton were Manistique vis itors yesterday. Mr. Elliott of this city is holding meetings at Orr’s corner every even ing. Dan Leavy of Frankfort is in port with his gasoline boat the Pearl. This is one of the nearest little crafts in the harbor, measuring thirty six feet long and is equipped with the latest model of a Gray motor of ten horse power. Mr. Leavy intends running moonlight excursions every evening at seven thirty to Thompson and back and at two o'clock Sundays. John Ferner who is representing a Detroit hardware firm is in the city calling on his local trade. A small bridge the other side of Cook's Mills burned Thursday delay ing the morning trains. The evening trains laid over in this city Thursday evening only running as far as the burnt bridge where the passenger and baggage were transferred to another special train. John Stack Jr. of Escanaba is in the city a few days on business. The cribs are being built on the dock off the second slip to hold the concrete blocks which are being made to put under water for the new gov ernment piers. A reception was held at the home of Rev. H. Ellis on Range street by the Episcopal choir last Thursday ev ening in honor of Viola Poultney who is one of the members of the gradu ation class this year. About thirty guests participated, all report an en joyable time. Rev. H. Shirs of Munising who has been visiting in the city left for his home last Friday morning. Harry Erickson who has been at tending M. A. C. at Lansing is home for his vacation. Frank Cassie of Marquette is in the city a few days on business. The steamer F. R. Buell left for St. Ignace where it will be loaded with lumber instead of loading in this port. Lansing Williams and Ted McClel lan left on the Buell for St. Ignace where they will undertake the load ing of the boat. John L. Green closes his week's engagement Saturday evening at the Star. He has been the second car toonist ever appearing before Manis tique people and his work is highly esteemed. Angus McLeod who has been on the grand jury at Marquette for the past week is back in this city. C. C. Squires of Grand Rapids is in the city a few days on business. Requirements for Appetite. Cleanliness and good appetite are twins, so are cheerfulness and good digestion. Avoid bickerings and heat ed discussions at the table. Eat slow ly taking time to chew thoroughly your food. You will be coaxed into an appetite through so little a thing as the immaculate cleanliness of the lin en and the dishes, the garnishing of the meat with parsley, watercress of latticed potatoes. A relish—olives, onions radishes, celery—often helps a stalled appetite into another course and the serving hot—not lukewarm— of the vegetables and meats that come from the oven is a wonderful aid to digestion.
