He attacked Claud Ford, a carpenter, kicking and pumeiing him about the yard until George Bethell interfered and told Adair that he wouldhave to arrest him if be did not go behave himself. Adair then drew bis knife and chrsed Bethell aroundawhile, but was at leugth persuaded.....to go away. He went over to the Kansas City Southern depot and several times asserted that he intended to go back to Tandy’s house and kill George Bethell. Mr. Bethell. telephoned to City Tiarshal Curtis m come up and arrest John, but be-fore the marshal could get to the Adair place, John had returned and renewed his attack on Bethell. Thelatter retreated, to the porch, with Jobu striking at him with # knife. At the door Bethell stopped and told Adair he would have to shoothim if fcuj did not desist. Adair kept advancing and Bethel! shot, thebullet taking effect in Adair’s*shoulder. Instead of frightening or stopping him, this seemed to enrage him all the more and he continued to use his knife mostvioious-ly. Bethell tired twice more, one bullet making a scalp wound and the other entering Adaif’s head kill-r’J ■ing him instantly. After the shooting Bethell surrendered to the officers. Monday♦morning he gave a five thousand dollar bond for his appearance at the September term of court, and was released. The consensus of qpiuion among the eye-witnesses to the tragedy ^|eems to be that the killing was unavoidable on Bethell’s part.k
