Collegians versus St. Bons. --- Result : Collegi ans, 1 Goal; St. Bons., 0. Last night was all that could be desired for the manly game of “soc cer,” both from on-lookers and play er point of view, and a well filled stand and thronged enclosure of spectators greeted above teams, who pulled off their championship fixture for this season. Football enthusi asts were a little bit concerned about the St. Ben’s team, this being their first appearance in a first division match, and when both teams turned out at 7 sharp they received a good reception—the St. Ben’s presenting a fine appearance in their new rig of blue and gold. Collegians won the toss, choosing the western end, and at 7.05 Shortall kicked off. FIRST HALF. The opening exchanges were in favor of Collegians, who pressed, dis playing a little combination at a fair ly fast pace. Close in on Nangle, two minutes from the start, Bastow tried a screw kick over his head and all but scored, the custodian just catch ing the ball and “punting” it out over the touch line. Collegians con tinued pressing, and soon from 4 “free” for a Bon's infringement, Jim Evans dropped a beauty into the net. One for the Collegians after six min utes play. Game continued with ex changes in favor of Collegians, the St. Bon's half-back line being a little bit erratic in their movements, afi soon another “free” was awarded the Collegians. This was badly handled by Tom Sparkes and was followed by a St. Ben's raid into Collegian ter ritory. With a little bit of combined effort they got close up to Butler in College goal, where Keating just missed a chance by shooting past. Collegians retaliated and raided Nangle’s territory, earning two cor ners in succession, which proved fruitless. Hands against Smallwool gave the St. Bon’'s a free kick. This was taken by Hearn, who placed the ball dangerously near Butler, but Haddon cleared to touch almost on the goal line. A series of “throws in” in favor of Collegians brought play down to other end, and Ayre from the right wing shot a beauty which all but told, Nangle just catching and throwing it out. Burnham got pos session, and making a brilliant run up the left wing had a try, the ball grazing the post and going past. The Collegians again pressed for a min ute or so, followed by a St. Bon's at tack, and Burnham again just failed to find the net, shooting a bit high Soon after a “free” was conceded Col legians, close in. Sparkes took the kick and placed nicely, but O'Flaherty cleared, and again St. Bon's got ag gressive, keeping the ball well up in Collegian end for a few minutes Then Haddon with a fine drive sent the ball well down, and Roberts get ting possession had a try, but shot over. From goal kick St. Bon's took possession and raided Collegian ter ritory, but the defense put up was too strong and play was speedily transferred to other end. The bal ance of this half was in favor of the Red and Blue, but no more scoring took place and the teams crossed Half time result—Collegians, 1; St Bon’s. St. Bon’s then made an onslaught on Butler's citadel which called for the best defensive efforts of Collegian back division. This continued for a few minutes, but all attempts to low er Collegian colors proved futile. The Collegians in turn got aggressive. Hard and fast play followed, and E. Ayre had a lovely try, the ball just grazing the post and going past five and take play was in evidence for some twenty minutes of this half, then a corner was conceded the St. Ben’s. This was well put in but shot over. Again, Ayre was in evidence on the right wing for Collegians, but he was brought up by Foley close up on goal. Time was now drawing near and both teams were playing a deter mined game, St. Ben's working hard for the equalizer and the Collegians trying hard to prevent. A few min utes before time the Collegians, after a nice little bit of combination in the front line, got the ball past Nangie, but no score resulted, the dreaded off-side whistle having sounded.
