• * From an Occasional Correspondent. *loiter Fiom RocliOfiter.*■Ru CHESTER, Ind., June 9. To the Editor:—Having just returned from a pleasure trip across Lake Manitaw, .situated about one mile east of'Rochester, a few items respecting it may not prove uninteresting to the readers of the Star, “Manilaw” is a name given this lake by a tribe of Indians (the Pottawattamie*) who inhabited this county about- forty years ago. The word signifies *‘devil,” or devil's lake. ! Tim tribe, it seems, had a great terror of being on or near Lhe lake at certain tilues, particularly in the time of a storm, from the supposed existencebfnlaTVaio:nsitherein of a great monster, which occasionally made its appearance, and to this day many people nround here believe iha: monster to inhabit die lake. Whatever iL niny be but little fear is entertained by llu? many and frequent visit-torn from both home and abroad who may daily be seen plying over its placid waters during the summer and lishing seasons. .Soundings have frequently been mafic in this lake, but in places 700 feet of rope have been suspended without any signs of boLtom.oS£tlukbtiotofTslt;tltlt;
