A. Ives of Kokomo is Delphi’s new Chief of Police. A 20-year veteran of the Kokomo Police Department, Ives was sworn in as chief by Mayor Sam Deiwert at City Hall Monday morning. Ives was an investigator and shift supervisor with the Kokomo Police. He also implemented and instructed the Drug Abuse Resis tance Education (DARE) program in Kokomo. The DARE program, under Of ficer Ives, was honored by the Governor’s Community Awards Commission as the outstanding substance abuse program in the state in 1988. In addition to the extensive train ing he received as a police officer, Ives earned a B.S. degree in criminal justice from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis in 1977 and an M.A. degree in public administration from Ball State in 1979. For the past two years, Ives has been involved — with the UAW/Chrysler Workplace Literacy Project in Kokomo. The project is under the auspices of Ivy Tech. Ives was responsible for im plementing the project and has been an instructor and counselor with the program. He also was an adjunct instructor at TUK for one semester. Ives has been active in his com munity and his church, especially devoting time to local fundraisers and charities. While an officer, he organized and sang in the gospel group The Peacemakers, com prised of Christian police officers. His wife, Marlis, is an area sales manager at Sears in Kokomo. They have five children and __ three grandchildren. A son is a deputy with the Howard County Sheriff's Department. Chief Ives and his wife said they are looking forward to moving to Delphi and being an active part of the community. Officer David Yeager has been acting chief since former chief.
