The Albert Lea Playground Season will begin Monday and run for eight weeks with activities planned for all age groups. The playground hours are nine a.m. to five p.m. daily. This year’s playground leaders attended a local instructional workshop at the Albert Lea Ci ty Center Friday and a South eastern Minnesota Regional Workshop Saturday to learn new ideas and methods for playground recreation. Tournaments and special events will highlight the season. City-wide tournaments in such activities as croquet, horse shoes, clock golf, tennis, bad minton and table tennis will be held. They will be held on Friday mornings for four age groups: eight and under, 9-10 year-olds, 11-12 year-olds and 13-14 year-olds. Thursday is special event day with baseball clinics, girls play day, kiddie dressup par ades, balloon ascensions, penny carnivals, juniors Olympics and Indian Pow Wows scheduled. Special events will also be sch eduled for individual play grounds. Girls softball leagues will be formed and a regular schedule will be followed. T-ball is sch eduled for small boys (second and third graders). An arts and crafts program, including sand painting, blot tos, chalk drawing, burlap flower making, will be conduct ed by a crafts leader visiting each playground regularly. The schedule for arts and crafts activities is as follows: ‘Monday, 9:30 to noon—Lake view; 1:30 to four p.m. — Mor in: Tuesday, 9:30 to noon—Ha yek; 1:30 to four p.m. — South west; Wednesday, 9:30 to noon —Northside; 1:30 to four p.m. —Hawthorne; Thursday, 9:30 to noon—Academy. The puppet wagon will — visit the playgrounds on a schedule to be posted at each of the playground buildings. The summer baseball pro gram begins this week with registration scheduled for Mon day and Tuesday at Brookside and Southwest. League play begins Wednesday. The leagues will be as fol lows: Cubs, fourth and fifth graders playing on Tuesday and Thursday mornings; Colts, sixth and seventh graders play ing on Monday and Wednesday mornings; Midgets, eighth and ninth graders playing on Tuesday and Thursday morn ings. Fridays will be used for makeup games Baseball league registration will entail a $2.90 fee for cap and shirt which the players are required to wear. A baseball clinic under the direction of Ed Stalker, high school baseball coach, will be held Thursday, June 14, at Hay ek. Girls can take part in a play at Morin the same day ,where games and activities will also be scheduled for all ages. Children will be bused to and from the playgrounds.
