Duster,#Concerned because her own children had no wholesome recreational facility, Mrs. Alfreda M. IXister sought the aid of the newly organized Southside Community Committee in 1941. She had been active in parent-teacherassociations from the day her eldest child entered school, so this venture into the grass roots program of providing wholesome recreational activity' for boys and girls simply expanded her efforts.After serv ing as a volunteer member of the HartzellCommunity Committee and secretary of the Board ofDirectors of the Southside Community'Committee for seven years, Mrs. Duster, 6632 Greenwood, became a member of the staff after her husband’s death. She has been community worker, director of girls* activities at camp, tutor, counselor, consultant to the Schools Committee of the Southside Community Committee and block club worker during her years of sendee with the Southside Community Committee. *Under her leadership the Award of Honor program hasbecome an institution. For thirty-eight consecutive semesters outstanding graduates of elementary schools have been commended for good conduct, good citizenship, good scholarship, and helpfulness to school and community.Her own children are evidence of successful endeavor with young people. Benjamin C. is an attorney, former candidate for Congress, Charles E. is an architect, in the structural department of Skidmore, Owings Merrill; Donald L, is assistant to the Manager of Divisions ofCommonwealth Edison Co., Alfreda Ferrell is teacher ofhandicapped children in the public schools of Los Angeles, California, Troy S. fXister, is assistant professor of sociology at the University of California at Riverside. All completed college, Troy received Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1962, at the age of 25.Mrs. rXister’s parents were Attorney Ferdinand L. Barnett, co-founder of Chicago’s first Negro newspaper, The Conserv ator, heabus corpus expert and former assistant state’s attorney, - and Mrs. Ida B, Wells-Bamett,Inuragemilitant crusader for justice, for whom the Ida B. Weiis Homes are named.Mr. Benjamin C. fXister, senior, was a special investigator in the office of Attorney General Barrett at the time of his death in 1945. He finished Indiana State Normal then went on to the University of Illinois, class of *20.Mrs. fXister is a member of Delta Sigma ThetaSorority, and Wood lawn Methodist church, where she serveson the official board as chairman of Christian Education.She is ecretary of the Alfreda Wells Duster Civic Club, organized in 1960 and named in honor of her and herlate mother.Mrs. CXister has been an inspiration to literally hundreds of Chicago’s young people, many of whom she has taken into her home and guided through difficult periodsof their lives.All of the *Five Little Dusters* as she used to call them, are married and Mrs. Duster is the proud grand-caher of nine.
