SIBMAIUNK NAVIGATION.IllMrtMr. Martin* k'H Invention anrl the p1Holland Boat. e]Mr. Martinek certainly believes that clt; he has a good thing' in the submarine tlboat which he has invented and a f(model of which is on exhibition in hiestore window, and it is unfortunatethat he is not in a position to give hisboat a thorough trial. The model asexhibited in his window is stripped ofall its rnachinerv but completely equipped, the boat has performed successfully in the presence of at least a 6coreof citizens of this city.Mr. Martinek has been at work onhis plans for at least twenty-two yearsand has during this time built sevendifferent models and is now convinceddCthat he has now constructed the perfect one All that is now necessary isto interest the necessary capital to build a full size boat.I p to the present time the only submarine craft to meet with anythingItke success is the one invented by J.eIChc1P. Holland and generally known as ][fithe Holland boat At present this boatis being tested 'at New ^ ork. and inspeaking of these trials the ChicagoRecord says:Pleased with the success of today’srapid-running tests, in which the Holland submarine boat made a mile in 5 ximinutes, inventor J. P. Holland tookthe wierd craft out into the bay forsome work in diving. He let himselfthrough the manhole and closed thetrap at 11:40 o'clock and the low-lyingshell left its moorings at South Brooklyn a few minutes later. Her coursewas laid out into the bay until she wasabout 100 yards off shore Then Mr.lt;Holland suddenly submerged her. Shewent down stern foremost and settledon an even keel in about twenty feet ofwater. She remained under nearly five minutes.Between the imminent approaches ofvarious crafts on the river the Holland made six dives of varying depths, none of which completely submergedh r, the deepest one taking her forward flag partly under water, leavingthe other almost two feet in the air.The toat will be taken out tomorrow, when, if the bay is tolerably free fromcraft. Mr Holland says that he will!make a long diva from Owl’s head to !Staten island. I
