AGbreaksGroundbreaking ceremonies were held last week for a three-part expansion and renovation program at Allegheny General Hospital.The program, which will cost more than $12 million and take two years, will include the addition of a Northwest Wing, renovation of the pediatric unit on the fourth floor of the main building and construction of a mechanicaltower.The new wing, five stories high, will feature a new Division of EmergencyMedicine four times the size of thepresent unit. The Division of Emergency Medicine is among the busiest in Pittsburgh will about 40,00 patient visits a year.The new facility will have the latest equipment for emergencies, 12 treatment rooms, a holding area for acute psychiatric patients and a spacious waiting area.The wing will also house new accomodations for X-ray and radiation therapy. The rapidly growing department will serve about 70,000 patients this year.Also in the new wing will beground.3expanded facilities for the Department of Laboratory Medicine/Singer Institute, a new computer center andbusiness and medical support facilities.Construction will also add 4,024 square feet of additional space to the pediatrics department.
