MR. WHEELER TELLS WHAT HE THINKS OF DANIELS’ CONCLUSION, He Is Willing to Do Many Things But the Council is Careful--A Com promise Bought About. The city council was in session at the council chamber last evening from 7:30 o'clock until 11 o'clock. It was a spec ial meeting called at the request of Mr. W. I. Wheeler, of Beloit, owner of the Monroe water works plant, to give him a chance to present his side of the water works question that had varisen in the past few days. Mr. Wheeler stated that if the water supplied was one half an that as the conclusion of the analysis slowed it to be the people had good reason to be alarmed. Joe accounted for the circu lated report that the water was ten times worse by this analysis than by the one of three years ago, by the fact that the previous analysis was taken from parts of ten thougned and the present one from parts of one million. ‘The figures of the present analysis were ten times greater because the parts from which the analysis was made was ten times greater. With the multipl iation the figures were compared and showed almost identically the same thing with the late analysia a little in favor of the water now supplied. The report of Prof. Smith of the Ba loit college, made in 1892, was pro duced and the analysis of other wells in different parts of the city were com pared with the water worka“W well, and the clay water was found to make the Dest.showing. Mr. Wheeler said when the water Works well was located it was done after careful consideration on the part of himself and the council, and he was desirous of furnishing as good a quality of the water as could be obtained. It would be to his interest to do so. He said the parts of chlorine and ni trates were no greater than any of the wella in this section even down to Free port, and the only reason he found to aecount for tia is that it is.the natural state of the water as it exists in the sail, Tle waa willing that an extended analysis be made of thy water. Not only of the water works well but of dif ferent wells in the city or surrounding the city and if the report of the water works well would not show up favor able the council would then have reas on to condemn his well. Whatever conclusion would be reached could also be compared. He was satisfied that any chemist who would come here and examine the well and the soil would not conclude that it was sever contamination. Nle gail the Daniell’s all was at random,, he perhaps did not even know where the water was taken from and was unfamiliar with the gail and the quality of water to be found. He presented his side of the case in weloar ligt. Tle was not successful in convincing the council that the water as what it should be. ITfe said he was willing to have an extended ana lysis made of the water, but he wanted to make his own proposition. A com promise was finally reached and a mo tioning made and carried that an analysis should be made of four or more wells outside of the corporation and be reported to the council. Prof. Daniel is to make the analysis and Mr. Wheeler to pay for the same, Mr. Wheeler will ake another visit to the city.
