FROM THE PLAIN?*.A dispatch received at military head quarters, read as follows : “ I have just returned to this point. I went to the Cheyenne agency above Fort Sully, and held a conversation with the Indians 'there. Troops have been placed at Old Tones* Wbetaurae, Crow Creek, Cheyenne and Grand River agencies. I have visited all except the latter. General Stanley was there n few days since and everything wa quiet. I have ordered two couipauies to the lower Brule agency, eighteen miles below Crow Creek agency, on application on the agent, who informed ine that he would not continue his business operations uuless troops were placed there. Everything seems quiet, but the future is considered uncertain along the river. At tho Cheyenne, Major Randalls sgency, is the only place where I talked with Indians. I observed they made no promises for the futurre, and some of the Indians there as well as at other agencies complained of troops being placed on their reservation. They understood, however, why it was done, oud seem to admit the justice of it. My impression is that we sliall have no trouble with Indians on the Missouri river of any general nature if the government continues it*-policy of feeding them, otherwise I have no doubt then; will be serious trouble. They w ill be more likely to make trouble elsewhere, as they can only trade on the Missouri. The policy of sending for representation of refractory Indians clearly would have good effect, and would generally break down their influence with the Indians. I request authority to advertise h reward of live hundred or one thousand dollars, say in horses, for the murderers of the family on Miobrara river. I believe may thus capture them, and at least produce the effort of deterring others from committing outrages, for fear of being arrested through similar rewards.(Signed) WinpielpS. Hancock, M»j.
