Maynard School Band Makes Big Hit in First Appearancelt;s-On Monday, May 29, the Maynard School Band, led by nine drum majorettes, made its initial public appearance in conjunction with the annual Memorial Day exercises of the public schools of Maynard.The band consisting of 28 members was reorganized last September. The precision and soldierly mien of the group helped to make the parade a spectacular success.Members of the band include:Trumpets: Fred Chandler, Edward Clark, Nicholas Drozdowski, Thomas French, James Hanson, Donald Hellawell, Rosario Lat-tuca, Edward Mullin, Francis Quinn, Larry Shorette, Edward Troisi, John West.Trombone: Meldon Niemi.Clarinets: James Baudreau, Alice Boeske, Larry Brooks, Walter Crowther, Roy Januskiewicz, Daniel Mulcahy, Robert Whitehouse.Saxophone: Dominic Barbuto.Drums: Edward Beals, BettyBoeske, Richard Carlton, Alfred DiGrappo, John Shaw, Philip Williams.Cymbals: George Carey.By fall the band will be in uniform and will play at the home football games.The drum majorettes, instructed by Miss Dorothy Slamin of Waltham, professional majorette and former state champion, have been training for quite some time. In their striking new uniforms of white pique trimmed wth gold, pert pill-box hats, and white tasseled boots, the girls could rival in appearance, marching form, and dexterity any group of its kind.The majorettes including girls from the grades, the junior high, and the high school consist of: Band Leader: Helen Johnson;Mascot: Sheila Nee;, Leader of Baton Twirlers: Mary Sweeney; Baton Twirlers: Audrey Alberi, Nancy Bain, Gerta Carlquist, Josephine Massarelll, Margaret Sweeney, Virginia Van Vorse.Also the following beginners: Mary Ellen Grigas, Leader, Ann Nordberg, Sandra Larkin, Ann Savikoski, Judith Rubin, Judith Tower, Mary Ellen Shay, JoanGrantmyre, Judy Kane, Kathleen Simons.The entire idea of band and majorettes was fostered and developed by Miss Eleanor Colburn, music supervisor of the Maynard schools. Miss Colburn has worked' tirelessly for four years to finance the project through annual mOsic festivals. Howe, Jr. held a Rally at the Town Hall with an International Program.Downstairs there was a display. Tables were tastefully decorate *»«* the four intermcuiate troops keeping with the country which each tronn chose for its special interest. The Senior troop displayed dolls representing the costumes of many countries. This exhibit was loaned to us by the Arlington Council through the kindness of Mrs. Albert Wunderly.The program of the Rally was: The Flag Ceremony; The National Anthem; World Wide Scout Song, “Our Chalet”; International Program (each troop participating); Court of Awards; Scout Hymn; Good night wishes; Taps (with echo.)A week ago Friday afternoon at the West Acton Woman’s Club the Brownies participated in a carefully planned program with Mrs. Theodore Williams in charge. After singing of Brownie songs by the united group of Brownies, Rev. David Thompson told the Brownie Story with the aid of flanelgraph pictures.Many received awards of one year pins showing that length of time spent as a Brownie. The following girls joined Brownies being of the age of seven or entering second grade next year. Those joining and thus receiving their Brownie pins were Carol Abbt,
