Milburn “Cabbagehead” Meador, who gave his age to State Police as 66, is being held in the County Jail today on a charge of unlawfully wounding Paul Bradley, 12, a Ne gro whom Meador claimed was stealing his strawberries yesterday. Bradley was treated by Dr. M. C. Banks, who quoted the boy as saying he was picking strawberries “along the right-of-way.” He said the boy was not badly wounded, that some 13 or 14 pieces of shot were taken from under the skin of the boy's legs. Dr. Banks said he gave the boy anti tetanus shots and sent him home. State Police quoted Meador as saying a group of Negro boys had been stealing strawberries from his garden, and that he shot into the ground trying to frighten them, and “accidentally” hit one of the youths hiding nearby. There was speculation at The Register office whether the gun used was the same one with which Meador threat ened former Register Reporter Carl Cahill and Beckley Fireman Hank Harkness and Herman Mandeville when they visited his shack near the Beckley city dump late in March. At that time Meador, who seems to have an aversion to “Catholics,” threatened the three men with a shotgun, and challenged them to a fight when Cahill started to take his picture. Meador is said to live off garbage at the city dump. Jailer William Bowles said Meador was unshaven and an unkempt condition when brought to the jail yester day. This morning, however, he had taken a shower and shaved off his beard. He still retained his handlebar mustache, however. Hearing for Meador, who was arrested by State Police, has not been set.
