Milburn “Cabbagehead” Meador, who says he likes privacy, is being held in County Jail today on a charge of shootling a Raleigh Negro. Meador, who doesn’t know his own age, but says he is between 66 and 70, told officers he shot the man, who was unidentified at press time, when he found him in his strawberry patch near his shack on Piney shortly before 5 p.m. yesterday. When booked at the jail Meador had over $130 in his possession, which he said he had “been saving for a long time.” The shooting occurred near the city dump on Piney. Meador was the subject of a news story last March, when former Register Reporter Carl Cahill, along with Beckley firemen Hank Harkness and Herman Mandeville, visited Meador’s home at the city dump. At that time Meador, who says he has an aversion to “Catholics,” threatened the three men with a shotgun, and challenged them to a fight when Cahill started to take his picture. Meador is said to live off garbage at the city dump. Jailer William Bowles said Meador was unshaven and an unkempt condition when brought to the jail yester ay. This morning, however, he had taken a shower and shaved off his beard. He still retained his handlebar mustache, however. Hearing for Meador, who was arrested by State Police, has not been set.
