PROJECTED ENTERPRISEMcCORMICK HARVESTER PEOPLE MAY PUT INCORDAGE MILLSImperial is in a fair way to secure avery important enterprise. 'I'His is the growing of sisal hemp on a large scale and its manufacture here into twine by the McCormick harvester people. Each one of the large manufacturers of harvesting machinery maintains extensive cordage mills, the difficulty in getting a steady supply of binding twine by the farmers having forced the manufacturers of self-binding machines to make a supply certain for the users of the machine. In following the search for supplies of the raw material the McCormick people a few years since established larire factories on the Pacific Coast of Dower California. They had discovered that hemp was indigenous to that country, and they began to utilize the wild product. Now the same company has not been slow to discover that the hemp grows extensively on the overflow lands oil the Colorado delta, on the Mexican side of the line, but a few miles from Imperial, and that there is every reason to believe that under cultivation large crops of it canbe grown any where under the Imperial irrigation system. A picture of the wild hemp near the line was printed in the PrKSS some weeks ago. It grows rankly and to a height of from fifteen to twenty feet, indicating that great quantities of it could he produced. Negotiations have been opened by the McCormick people to secure several hundred acres of land and water a few miles east of Imperial 011 which to grow the hemp, and it is expected that a cordage mill will be in operation here within a year. The supply of hemp for the United States is almost entirely imported from the East Indies and other tropical countries, and when it was found that a partial supply could be obtained so near home as Lower California it was considered a distinct advantage, while it would be of great importance to the industries of the United States if the Imperial settlements shouldprove a source of supply, and there seems to be every reason to believe that this will prove to be the case. There is an abundance of land herefor growing all the sisal hemp needed in the country.S\1lwhl»tl
