Vaccination of Livestock.email pox vaccine was discovered . 1796 but it was not until 1881 that111 . vaccine was discovered for preventing disease in live stock. In this v.ar Pasteur, whose name is so well i m.wn to the public in connection with i is celebrated treatment for hydropho-discovered the vaccine for protecting animals against anthrax, and this was shortly followed by the discovery the vaccine for preventing symptomatic anthrax, or blackleg as it is com-monlv called, in cattle. As soon as the ,-eventive vaccination of live stock found to be both practical and suc-ssful the manufacture of anthrax and blackleg vaccines was undertaken *.j a commercial enterprise. In the ten vears succeeding their discovery the anthrax and blackleg vaccines were employed to great advantage in nearlyevery country in Europe where millions' of cattle have been vaccinated, with the result that the mortality from anthracoid diseases, which formerly amounted annually in some localitiesto 20 per cent, was reduced to less than one half of one per cent. The success ful use during ten years thoroughly established vaccination as a cheap and practical method of preventing both anthrax and blackleg, and the vaccines were no longer an “experiment.”In the United States blackleg was known and many thousands of young cattle were annually perishing from its attacks, and, although vaccination was being successfully practiced in Europe and had been favorably mentioned by American authorities, yet no one had thought of, or at all events attempted to introduce it to the American cattlemen. In 1895 the Pasteur Vaccine Co., of Chicago, investigated the matter and from resuls reasoned that blackleg vaccine, would, as soon as it became known, be ai profitably and successfully used in North America. The Pasteur Co., therefore, introduced vaccination for blackjeg and placed the remedy within easy reach of the cattle raisers. All this involved the expenditure of a large amount of capital for introductory and educational work. The results obtained show that the Pasteur Vaccine Co. was correct in its calculations. During the past five years nearly 2,000,000 head of cattle in North America have been successfully vaccinated with their vaccine, so that today the large ranch owner as well as the farmer owning but a few head of cattle, have become acquainted with the value cf preventive vaccination, and a large and increasing number of them have been and are availing themselves of the protection against blackleg thus afforded. Naturally the succe s of the original vaccine encouraged attempts to imitate it, but the cattle raisers prefer to use the vaccine prepared by the discoverers and which has already es-ablished its reputation rather than try new or experimental vaccines made by other-:. When taking into consideration the benefitconferred on the cattle industry of the country by the saving of large numbers of cattle, representing the great amount of capital, together with the low cost of the vaccine, it is easy to understand that Pasteur vaccine is^ being more largely used every year. The Pasteur vaccine is now furnished in a form ready for use, which is a great saving of time and labor.
