A Boy Bitten by the Poisonous Reptile at Shirley. A little son of Clay McMillan, living at Shirley, was engaged in picking bugs from potato vines in his father’s field near the Alton station, when a rattlesnake seized his leg between the knee and the ankle. He ran to the house, and whisky was at once administered. Dr. Speer was sent for and gave him the proper antidotes, and he seemed to be all right. The doctor is in Chicago attending a meeting of physicians, and this morning the boy was so much worse that Dr. Guthrie, of this city, was sent for by Mr. J. L. Douglas to go down and attend him. ‘The bite was inflicted about 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. It is seldom that one encounters a rattlesnake in this section of the State although they were once very abundant. However, they are re ported more numerous this season, and a section baas on the Alton road reports the killing of twelve yesterday on his section south of this city. Dr. Guthrie returned from Shirley at 3:45 p. m., and reports the boy’s condition serious, and likely to be fatal, although his general condition is good. His leg is badly swollen, and has the peculiar mottled ap parel which accompanies snake-bites, he doctor says that this is the first case he has ever had in his practice.
