Once they were permitted to follow the humble employment of carrying up bricks and mortar, but they were kicked from the ladder by our while fellow citizens. They clean boots, scour clothes, but are not permitted to sweep streets—-they do not own or command a ship, they are only cooks and stewards—they are not merchants, bankers or brokers—they hold no public appointments, and are rudely thrust from our cars and carriages— we do noteat with them or pray with them — and in our place* of amusement there are pens and divisions, in which they may sit by themselves. Is it a wonder that they arc poor, vicious ami the inmates of our hospitals and prisons? And yet, we who persecute, neglect and repudiate the black man here, are tilled with holy zeal to make the black inan free at the south, and deprive him of a home, of loot I and clothing, and of a kind considerate master; and we struggle for that freedom even at the expense of breaking down and dividing and destroying our glorious republic! Well may the blacks *ay ‘'Save ua from our friends! —save u* from the pity and I protection of the political abolitionists.”
