Avon descent to be filmed11 was reported in last week's Northum Advertiser” that a Perth television station is plan ning to make a 20-minute film of the Northam-to-Perth boat lace, the “Avon Descent, in July and has plans to screen it throughout Australia. The television station (Channel 9). in conjunction with the Nor-iham Tourist Dc vclo pment Committee, will also be spon soring the event.It was announced by the president of the Northam tour ist dcvelo pment committee, Mr. Jim Paine, that the race will be held on July 20. 21 anil 22. Some 200 entry forms have been issued for the event and already a record 90 confirmed entries have been received. Members of Perth Life Savers United have entered six specially built craft and this year five Northam teams are expected to enter the race.Briefing for the event willhe held at Channel 9 studios,giving entrants an idea of thecourse and its hazards. It hasbeen decided that safety ruleswill be more strictly enforced on the entrants and these willbe explained at the briefing.Northam Town Council has agreed to present a perpetual trophy for the event, and Home Building Society is donating $100 to the outright winner.The Avon Descent was first I Jd last July, when it was the first large scale boat and cuiioc event to be held on the Avon River. Its success last year and predicted success this Near is expected to build the event into one of W.A.’s lead-aquatic attractions.
