Author HonoredNatalie Savage Carlson, former Long Beach newspaperwoman, won the New York Herald Tribune’s 18th annual Children's Spring Book Festival award with her picture book for small children, Alphonse: That Bearded One. Alphonse is a bear trained as a soldier so that his master would escape conscription. It is illustrated by Nicolas, published by Harcourt, Brace Co. and costs $2.50. In the decision of the judges, the book deals with the most unusual and mirth-provoking hero in many a day and has superbly funny pictures. IA graduate of St. Anthony's High School, Mrs. Carlson was employed on the Long Beach Sun. Her husband, Capt. Daniel Carlson, USN, is chief of staff of the Blockading and Escort Force in Japan and Korea. The family live at 49 Berkeley Ave., New'port, R. I. Mrs. Carlson won the Herald Tribune aw^ard in 1952 for 'Hie Talking Cat.
