Local Rad CroM Doe* Good Work.A tragedy that far surpasses any other that Campo has ever experienced took place at the Roae-IIeadlee sale, four And one-half miles west of Campo Thursday morning, about eleven o'clock.A large crowd had gathered for the sale and it had not been long on the grounds before a heavy rain storm came up, and as shelter was insufficient for the crowd, a group of men took a tarpaulin and stretched it overa pole to form a protection from the rain. Several were grouped under this shelter when a bolt of lightning struck into the group, instantly killing W. S. Hiatt, H. W. Southworth, J, A. McClellan, Rev. Dimock, and J. C. Hath way. Those injured by the stroke were, Calhoun, Frank Her-shinger, son-in-law of H. W.r South-worth, William Burleson and White.Machinery had been gathered up ready for sale, and it wus near this the shelter had been erected. Assoon as poHBible the parties were extracted from under the cover and moved into the open, where everything possible was tried to revive them. This work was carried on in a downpour of rain and hail.Auctioneer Thompson left the scene immediately for Campo to telephone for a doctor, but the line between Campo and Springfield had Buffered from the storms of the previous day and necessitated his going on through to Springfield. Hcrahing-er was removed immediately to his home in the Badgley car and no report as to his condition has been received as we go to press. All of those injured are in a critical condition and especially Burleson, whose lower limbs were paralyzed and left side burnt from the stroke. Hiatt in. all probability received the worst of the stroke, as his body was badly burned, the hair on his head being singed by the electrical current. In the emergency the local Red Cross turned over their foodstuffs to those who will assist in the care of bodies. Obituary notices will follow in next issue. Burial will probably be Saturday afternoon. As this goes to press we are informed that those injured are recovering rapidly with the exception of C. C. White, whose condition is very critical. The body of H. W. Southworth will be buried this afternoon. Saturday forenoon is the time set for the other interments. Campe Cemetery. —-Campo Enterprize.J.
