The supreme court granted a new trial, on account of the absence of an important witness, and the case was tried again and Geddes allowed his freedom. He has left the state, going to New Zealand, and is said to have deserted his wife, who is now willing to take the stand and testify against him. The proposition of extraditing Geddes for another trial is being considered by the authorities. The Geddes case is one of the most noted in Montana criminal annals. The grand jury ol Custer county indicted him lor assaulting WmnifridBrown, a boy, by tying him to a fence and nearly killing him with a whip. While under indictment Geddes was released on bail and went to Chicago. While there young Brown was killed, and the state claimed Geddes hired George Dixon, a negro, to kill Brown, so he could not testify against him, since if convicted he could not inherit a rich legacy promised him by his Scotch godfather, a wealthy banker of Edinburg. The state induced Dixon to turn state's evidence. Dixon pleaded guilty and got thirty years. Geddes, his wife and Thomas Welsh, a cowbov, were tried for murder. The men were convicted, the jury disagreeing in the case Mrs. Geddes. The supreme court granted Geddes and Welsh new trials, but Welch died in Anaconda two days ago.Geddes’ wife is suing her husband to receive title to property she claims he induced her to fraudulently sign away. This suit brought out the fact that Gedde* had deserted his wife and gone to New Zealand, and the further fact that the wife is now willing to tell all about the Brown murder and how Geddes concocted the scheme and urged the negro to kill the boy.
