This afternoon at 2 o'clock the corner stone of the Latter Day Saint (Mormon) chapel will be laid. The building is rapidly taking shape at the intersection of Berry Ave., and Maple street. A program has been arranged for the occasion and will include speeches by prom inent church members and there will also be several musical num bers. President Samuel F. Smith of the Snowflake Stake will give the main address. It is expected that the building will be completed by Aug ust first and the cost will be ap proximately $11, 000. One third of this amount has been donated by the local members and citizens of Winslow and by the Snowflake Stake. It is the policy of the Church to allow a Ward or Branch one dollar for every two dollars they are able to raise locally. Winslow, owing to the size of the town, and on ac count of there being only a small membership was made an exception to this established rule. The Presi dent of the Church, Heber J. Grant peritted the rule to be reversed and allowed the Local L. D. S. Church two dollars for each one subscribed here. This was done in order to erect a building which would be a credit to the City of from the regular church fund which from the regular church fund which is used for such purposes. The corner stone will be laid by the contractor, Jack Hummel. It will contain a copper box seven by six by six inches. In the box will be placed the Standard Books: of the church, the Bible, King James: translation; the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants; and Pearl of Great Price; a copy of today’s Winslow Daily Mail, a complete list of the subscribers of id’ tie amount given by each. The building is of Gallup brick construction. It will have a seat ing capacity of about two hundred, in the main’ assembly on the upper floor and will be modern in every respect. The‘ lower floor contains a kitch en, rest rooms and a large recrea tion hall, which may be divided by folding doors into four class rooms. A baptismal e font is also located on this floor. It has been arranged so that theatrical plays or motion pictures may be given if desired.
