THE FIRST OF THE SUMMER CON CERTS AT THE SHOOTING PARK A SUCCESS, Many Prominent Citizens and Their Families Present, and Choice Music Discoursed by the Cornet Band— Fine Display of Fireworks. The first of the summer concerts at the Shooting Park was given Wednes day evening, under the auspices of the Dubuque Shooting society, and it was a flattering success in all respects. The evening was an ideal one, and the air was almost as balmy as in mid-summer. The park was brilliantly illuminated with lights of different hues, which were suspended from trees in all parts of the park—presenting a very pretty appear ance and one that must have been something lke fairy land, according to the vague idea we mortals have of that place. In addition there were large headlights, whose stronger flood of light illuminated the beautiful valley in which the park is located and reflected on either side until the green foliage was brought out in bold relief, making a background fringe to the picture, which was all that the most ardent ad mirer of Nature—embellished by art— could desire. The chub house was also tastily decorated and the arc lights in side made it as bright as day. A car pet of emerald covered the park and its velvety surface was pressed by the foot of the youth and maiden, while the old er folks, who did not care about prom enading, sat on neatly arranged lawn settees or remained in their splendid equippages. The Dubuque Cornet band rendered the music, several numbers of which were new and delighted the auditors. The stand occupied by the band was decorated in an attractive manner as well as brilliantly illuminated. Those present represented a large number of the cultured and music-loving people of Dubuque, and the entire affair was something of which its promoters have just reason to feel proud. The display of fireworks was on an elaborate scale, and was witnessed from the bluff on the south side of the park. Here rockets, Roman candles, flower pots and almost all other kinds of fire works were sent Heavenward, making a magnificent scene. Those in charge of the display manged it in a superb manner, and without the slightest ac cident. Those in charge of the respective re spective departments were as follows: Grounds—John Butt. Fireworks—W. H H. Klauer. Bowling Alley—E. B. Pickenbrock and Charles Schreiber. Gate F. Heer, Jr., and S. B. Rice. Refreshments—Frank H. Kutsch. Observer of the Park—Joe Bonz. The society offers $75 In prizes for the bowling alley, divided as follows: First prize, $25; second, $20; third, $15; fourth, $10; fifth, $5. The man who has ‘the highest score at the end of the season will take the first, and so on down. Ties will be rolled off. The opening was‘a success and augurs well for the continued success of these concerts.
