Hasselberger is a German and speaks French fluently, as does his wife, and they made it a custom to visit Burniger, who is a Frenchman, almost every Sunday and frequently during the week.Hasselberger was in the house but fifteen minutes when he said he wanted to get some air and he walked in the yard. But a moment elapsed and he left a groan out of him that excited the inmates of the house who traced the sound of the voice to the water closet where they found Hasselberger with his throat cut from ear to ear. Panic stricken, the wife crying desperately and the children j adding their sorrowful voices to the gen- I eral grief, neighbors were attracted to the spot and the man who cut Ids throat with a ra/or, was picked up, amid a ter- | rible scene, a large stream of blood ooz- 1 ing from the self inflicted gash it was apparent that he would soon bleed to death, if relief did not soon come.A physician was quickly summoned and Dr. ,1. M. Spear responded, lie found the man lying on an improvised cot and stitched the wound. The throat was cut from ear to ear and the windpipewas severed. Later, the would-be suicide was removed to his home, llassel-berger, w ho was employed in the Cumberland lt;rlass Works, has always borne a good reputation for industry and sobriety. He has been overo/ealous in his religious devotion and to this is attributed the rash deed. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul’s church, and lately got it into his head that his sins could not be forgiven. He did not work any last week until Saturday, and lie has* been sutTering from despondency and temporary insanity, which culminated in the attempt made upon his life yesterday.It was feared that from the terrible loss of blood, his recovery is doubtful. Toward evening he showed some reaction, and he may “pull through.” After he had been picked up, he called for his wife, to whom he said “he was out of his mind” when he cut his throat, and this is the only explanation made. Hasselberger is about 50 years old and has a family consisting of'his wife and four children.
