HOWELL, KY.May 25,1880.En. South Kentuckian :Having just returned from a trip of ten days, or upwards to the Purchase country, 1 will make a brief report of the news in this section.First, on my return I discovered some very important improvement a at Mrs. Wijson’s. A large line barn for tobacco, reared in the back grouqd, yet within the corporate 'limits of our town, viewed from a distance, quite an addition to our place. Mr. Kopcr did quite an excellent job, judging from outside appearance. Also Mr. Haskins added much to his premises by enclosing his dwelling and yard with a nice plank fence; also across Main street, near the depot, Charlie Williams lias built a nice enclosure about his house, all of which goes to show the spirit and enterprise of our town. The speed of progression at which we are now traveling will ere long entitle us to gas lights.Candidates are plentiful in these parts. As usual, they all seem to be very clever geutlemcu and they think so much of the people, black and white, in this section, and will until the August election.B. C. Boyd took the little boys and girls, of our place, on a pleasure trip to Clarksville, Teun., to witness the drill of Knights of Pythias and other amusements.Miss Florence Thornbury has returned home from a week’s visit to licrndon, where she attended a protracted meeting at the Methodist church. The Misses Wilson also attended in part. Some other attraction, no doubt, about Herndon for the young ladies of Howell.Farmers are very busily engaged replanting corn on account of the cut worms, such an amount of them. Great trouble is apprehended in getting a stand of tobacco ou the same account. The wheat prospect is still nattering, but low prices expected.Since strawberry time Judge Wil-kis bolds the scale beam at 300 lbs., no less.Met Anderson is one among the neatest farmers in Christian county and makes less to do about it, and time does not pass him unimproved.Ben Boyd, as usual, is up with bis farm work and making arrangements to attend tha grange sale at Church H ill, with two|of his small nil cep,Bob Boyd’s daughters. Two of the candidates, Cy Brown and Sheriff Boyd, gave us a passing call, distributed a few cards to the voters of our town, took some refreshments and passed quietly on. Both gentlemen arc physically if not mentally able to discharge the duties of the oHiclt; a to which they aspire.F. M. Quarles is contemplating a trip to Bowling Green, Ky, very shortly, we presume to see to his in terest in that city. Everybody knows Frank, that he is a live man ip a community, none would dare dispute. We have not learned his boy’s name yet.
