Dawson’s Daih Times. !rj^b—a——iTuesday Evening, Jane 4, 1861.QJRPHAM ASYLUM AGAIN.The reader will remember that on last Sat yr day we copied an order of the County Board, made on the 14th March last discontinuing all recognition of that “Orphan Asylum, Fort i Wayne Hospital,” owned and superintended by ; Bernard Rekers, and ordering Mr. Rekers “to i deliver up to Janies M. Reed, Superintendent ' of the County farm and Asylum, all paupers of ^ said county then in his charge in Fort Wayne | Hospital Orphan’s Home, or otherwise,” and that the County would not pay or agree to pay ' Bernard Rekers any compensation for paupers , received after that time. And the reader will | further recollect that the Auditor was ordered i thereby to- make a copy of said order to be lt;transmitted to said Bernard Rekers, which, as ( we said on Saturday, was certified to by Mr. , Rekera oft the 19th of March aforesaid. Now our object to-day is to say that Mr. Reed, Superintendent, called promptly on said ltekers at that time, and made a demand of all such persons as were paupers of said County, jn the charge of said Rekers in Fort Wayne Hospital, Orphan’s Home, or otherwise. A little more light on the matter may be of use to the County Treasury. If these were paupers they should have been in the poor house, and hence were not authorized to be kept in “Fort Wayne Hospital.” If they were not paupers, then Mr. Rekers could not deliver them to Mr. Reed as Superintendent, nor could Mr. Reed receive them into tho County Asylum. But who could Mr. Reed receive of Mr. Rekers ?— Why, only such as were “paupers of said County c.” and Mr. Rekers delivered none to Mr. Reed, and hence we may rightly infer that therv were no “paupers” in said Rekcr’s charge, for certainly lie would not be likely to have such great bowels of compassion as to keep so many “paupers” without reward or the hope thereof. Oh no ! “there’s the rub.” Mr. Re-kefs saw that the moment he acknowledged them as paupers, they could be forcibly taken Sroaft him by law, and placed in the only institution known to tho law for keeping such at the expense of the County; and once out of his kind and “fatherly” care, he could create no excuse to ask tho county to pay him for keep-ipg those Orphan paupers of his at a great profit per week; ao he chose to keep the teat in his mouth, though then dry, and live in the hope that it would give nourishment, if per-chante he could get the Commissioners to rescind their order, and give him one dollar per week for keeping those, who as orphans, he formerly got donations out of the people for, and as paupers got appropriations out of the County funds. There is the trick laid bare, and the charity of our Orphan’s Home man ventillated. Ip other words they arc Orphans for charitaUe purposes, and paupers for the profit in keeping them at the County expense, provided Father Rekers can keep them in Fort Wayne Hospital, or Orphans’ Home. Now we have heard and seen enough of the workings of this insidious thing; have seen begging papers at least once per year for many years, asking alms for it; have seen the County unlawfully paying money to it, all which arc enough to disgust any intelligent and honorable man; and we hope therefore to hear no more of it in a public way; wishing itdistinctly understood that so far as it is conducted as a private matter, we can and do find no objections, hut commend the same to a properly considered charitable feeling.
