THE GOLD REGION. Several small companies have recently pass ed through our town in search of the gold that is reported to cover the mountains and valleys along the “Sandies.” Without any disposition to throw a wet blanket over the enterprise, we publish on our first page an interesting sketch entitled “A trip to the Gold Diggings,” taken from the South Western American, and which, to our mind, contains far more wholesome truth than poetry. That there is gold in Texas—ay, on the “San dies”—we have not the slightest doubt; but that it can be found in such “immense piles,” as has been represented, and so extensively circulated throughout the country, we consci entiously believe to be the greatest humbug of the age—a ruse, gotten up, to induce emigra tion to that section of the State, with the view of disposing of lands and settling up the coun try. We are more firmly convinced of this, from having recently seen and conversed with sev eral intelligent gentlemen on the subject, who have just returned from the mines. They con firm, to some extent, the report of the exist ence of gold—that some small specimens have been found, but, like angel’s visits, they are “few and far between,” and that, considering the labor, toil, trouble, etc., the game is not worth the candle. We would, therefore, say to those who are about visiting that portion of Texas, in search of what has justly been termed the root of all evil, to keep cool and not suffer your minds to be dazzled by the thousand and one glittering rumors that are wafted by every mountain breeze across the land. , Keep in view the old axiom, “all is not gold that glitters,” remain at home with your families, cultivate your firms, and our word for it, you will, at the end of the year, have reaped a richer harvest of gold, than those who are now at “ the mines” seeking after brilliant uncertainties.
