SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (7) — The mystery of four Illinoisans swallow ed up in the New Mexico desert 17 years ago was deep ag ever today after another fruitless effort to crack the case. On his return from Albuquerque, N. Mex., James Christensen, chief state crime investigator, said Mon day his interview with a prospector who claimed important knowledge yielded little of value. The prospector had written Gov ernor Stevenson saying he had in formation about the fate of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Lorius of East St. Louis and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heberer of DuQuoin. The four persons, driving to gether on a vacation trip to the west coast, dropped out of sight in May, 1935, presumably while cross ing New Mexico. A week after they last were heard from, their automobile was found abandoned in Dallas, Tex. In early June, charred remains of lug gage and personal effects were dis covered in a canyon near Albuquer que. A card bearing the name of Mrs. Heberer was nearby. Repeated large scale searches failed to disclose what happened to the Illinoisans.
