Herbert “Chub” Hughes opened up Martin’s New Diner May 31 and sold the first cup of coffee to Harold Pin ney, of North Salem, who delivers High Meadow Farm Dairy products there. Hughes recalls the opening of the “Old Diner” in 1916 and Charlie Avery as the first customer. When he closed the old diner Sunday night Bob Collins was noted as the last cus tomer for a cup of coffee. The new diner has as many gadg ets as Lewis Conger. Table service is available for parties who prefer it to the counter with the tempting vi ands in full view. What makes one feel at home is the same friendly cus tomers and the same staff, augment ed by Mary Blaney Sterry, who is a Main Street personality of long standing. John Martin, proprietor, his sons, Harold and Joe, and Herbert Hughes watched the departure of the old dineray, June 3, 1948.
