(By Jasper Vale) “City votes. bond issue. of $13,500 for the acquisition of a public park’ read an article in the Corona Inde pendent of Nov. 1911. Now, ten years later, (a short time in which to consider the growth of a park, it is true) we are realizing on the investment made at that time. Wisely planted with two types of trees, that is, those of slow growth which in years to come will form the principal planting, and those of quick growth so as to produce im mediate results, the park has proved itself to be a success: its benefits have been a source of constant en joyment to the citizens of Corona and we can justly pride ourselves that, potentially at least, we have one of the finest small parks in the whole United States. “Well done, City Council of 1911 and your park committee,” is the opinion of the people of Corona and the hordes of tourists, who daily pass by the park over the Sixth street drive, echo the sentiment. The bond issue in 1911 provided $13,500 with which to create a park and to select the site: the council appointed a committee made up of five members, one from each of the four precincts of the city and one from the city-at-large in which William Corkhill, represented Pre cinct 1; B. M. Lillibridge, 2; L. A. Fink, 3; and L. L. Andrews 4, Mrs. W. H. Jameson was representative of the city-at-large. In addition to this committee, a joint committee repres enting various civic organizations was chosen to act with the first named body. In the joint committee were Dr. E. H. Smith and W. J. Rua dsell from the Chamber of Commerce; W. J. Pentelow and L. R. Nichols of the Park Commission; Miss Stella Platt and’ Mrs. C.'A. Holloway, the Woman’s Club and Mrs. H. H. Case and Mrs. A. W. Bates the ‘Music lab. The ‘two committees after many meetings and after inspecting sever al pieces of property, finally decided on the present tract on E. Sixth St., (Continued on Page Three)
