EDUCATIONAL.•»orality versus Religion.The Moral Instruction League aims at the substitution of systematic non-theological moral instruction in all State schools, and to make character the chief object of school life.Miss £ona Vallance, the secretary,writes from the Deanery, Stratford, that the Association is extensively circulating a petition for signature by parents of the children attending the London Hoard schools, with the avowed objectof thus indicating the real wishes of the persons most directly concerned in this controversial subject.The document sets forth that it is the desire of the Signatories to prove the falsity of the assertion that they are satisfied with the religious teaching now given in the schools, and “ to help towards the introduction of moral teaching which should make no appeal to supernatural or superhuman motives, which are not suitable to the understanding and character of children, and are , particularly out of place when taught in State schools, which are maintained at the cost of citizens of every creed and of no creed.”Their appeal, therefore, is that facilities be granted to our children to receive, in place of the present Bible lessons, instruction in personal and civic duties from Hoard school teachers especially trained for the purpose, by which i ust rue I ion the sense of responsibility, sympathy with all sentient beings, intellectual honesty, the spirit of liberty, courage, self-respect, and the other higher qualities of manhood would, it is fondly imagined, be systematically cultivated and strengthened.
